Mr. Jeremy Jay has been a very busy man, producing almost an album a year. This year we will see a double release from Jeremy Jay – the first effort titled Splash is Jeremy Jay’s most infectious album to date, continuing his romanticised pop fantasy. Listen to the title track below.

Splash is out May 22 through K Records.

As our answer to Camera Obscura, Perth’s Institut Polaire are adding the final touches to their upcoming record Make Your Own Mayflower. And if you’re Sydney next week, they’ll be previewing this release at World Bar.

[MP3] Institut Polaire – We Can’t Wait No More

The release date for Make Your Own Mayflower is yet to be confirmed but I’ll keep you posted. If you can’t wait, I have two double passes to their show at MUM, World Bar next Friday, April 23. Just email us here with the subject line ‘I Wanna Make a Mayflower’.

Monotonix is not your typical band. The Israeli garage rockers are brash, provoking and crude. This not only applies to their live shows but also manifests in their newest release, Where Were You When It Happened? – the follow up to their Body Language EP.

Photo: Eilon Paz

Sure, Where Were You is packed with all the Black Sabbath/Mudhoney references you can cram but who gives a shit. What we have is an album that acknowledges this, then tramples all over it in true Monotonix style: bottom-heavy riffs accented with crunchy solos and the shrill of Ami Shalev’s vocals. Delivered with such frenetic pace, blink and Where Were You might just be over – it’s a swift, sharp blow you probably wouldn’t see coming and it’s darn exhilarating too. Too put it simply, this is an album with balls and I can’t imagine this record without limbs being broken.

Key tracks include “Set Me Free” , “I Can’t Take It Anymore” and “Spit It On Your Face”.

[MP3] Monotonix – Set Me Free

Where Were You When It Happened? is out February 27 on Popfrenzy.

4 Mar Ding Dong Lounge, Melbourne

Grab a drink, some friends and spin Thee Oh Sees over your next party and you’re pretty much set for a rad time. Their garage tunes are hazy, jangly and melodic partly due to the dual-vocals present – drowned in reverb this is the sort that is rough and ready. Help is their fourth full-length and is another addition to their already extensive catalogue, continuing their true ruckus fashion.

From Help:
[MP3] Thee Oh Sees – Ruby Go Home

You! Do you have plans for New Years Eve yet? Anything? Nothing? Perfect!

Ponytail

Photo: Christopher Dibble

The Purple Sneakers New Years Eve house party is perhaps Sydney’s premier party to end the year. Consider 2,500 of your mates in a lounge room with some of the world’s best bands and dj’s including The Boxer Rebellion and Baddies from the UK, and the always-amazing Ponytail from Baltimore. Top that with some our finest local talent like The Grates, Philadelphia Grand Jury, Red Riders, DZ and many more, and you’ve pretty much got a recipe for the perfect end to 2009. With the first release of tickets sold out (and a second release sure to sell out soon), this is one party that beats being cramped by the Harbour.

And yep, you guess it! Thanks to Boundary Sounds, we have one double pass to the Purple Sneakers New Years Eve House Party to giveaway to one of our readers. Fronting the British trio Micachu & The Shapes is the 22 year old, experimental singer-songwriter Micachu – the moniker of Mica Levi. The trained musician has already been commissioned to write a piece for London Philharmonic Orchestra, rapped with Wiley and Mecury Prize winner, Speech Debelle and her debut album, Jewellery, is perhaps one of the most freshest sounding and critically-acclaimed albums this year. If it’s new sounds you are after, Micachu & The Shapes is the band for you.

Micachu

Photo: Olly Hearsey

Just a note: the music of Micachu & The Shapes is abstract. It is heavily syncopated and dissonant, even awkward. The array of sounds generated from numerous homemade instruments is catchy, so catchy it’ll keep the kids with short attention spans at bay. Their unique sound has already captured the experimental pop queen Bjork and next year, it will be our turn to experience the flurry of chaotic sounds from Micachu & The Shapes who will be here as part of the Days Like This festival.

4 Jan The John Curtin Hotel, Melbourne
8 Jan Amplifier, Perth
10 Jan Days Like This festival, Sydney w/ Cat Power & Dirty Delta Blues, Pivot and many more.

Thanks to the kind folks over at Days Like This, we have one double pass to the Days Like This festival happening at the Entertainment Quarter in Moore Park. Like with all TWYE giveaways, all you have to do is leave yourself a comment with your favourite day and why. We might just pick you as our lucky winner on November 30. Good luck!

Over a year ago, googling for the band Songs was a rather difficult task. Show after show I would see them filling support slots and it always left me optimistic for the Sydney-based quartet. I never realised it would take this long to deliver their first full-length release.

Songs

Photo: Rachael Cassells

Good things come to those who wait, right? Their self-titled release sees a culmination of the music they’ve been staging over the past year. They introduce those familiar sounds, now refined and tangible. The general tone in their self-titled release is relaxed – a style not only indicative of our lifestyle but also musically as they fuse elements of Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, The Clean and Galaxie 500. This is 12 well-structured tracks, drenched in fuzzy distortion and reverb contrasting the blissful vocal melodies of Max Doyle and Ela Stiles most notably in “Clouds”, “Its Dry”, “Just an Idea” and “Pain”. The grand track, “Just an Idea” basks in constant sunshine – it is impressive and stirs memories of summer. Songs have developed a distinct musical identity complete with a strong following and not once have they fallen flat. They are a band that is constantly exciting and I hope this never changes.

[MP3] Songs – Different Light

In light of this release, Songs will be hitting the road for a three-stop tour. Dates are below:

26 Nov Oxford Art Factory, Sydney w/ Panel of Judges & Lost Animal
28 Nov The Club House, Brisbane
29 Nov Workers Club, Melbourne w/ Kes Band, Fabulous Diamonds & The Ancients

___
As our birthday month, we have one double pass to give away to any of the dates above thanks to Popfrenzy. All you have to do is leave a comment here and we’ll randomly pick the winner on November 23.

Songs is out November 21 on Popfrenzy.
