El Guincho‘s Alegranza (Mistletone) is an amazing release, stylistically similar to Panda Bear’s, Person Pitch (Paw Tracks).

Weekends of birthday parties, turning into extravagant affairs of costume parties.

Darkrooms, darkroom etiquette and cutting paper with guillotines in complete darkness. The safe lights in these darkrooms are barely noticeable, its that dark.

Pivot playing to a really packed Oxford Art Factory.

HAPPY HOUR.

Upgrading my Flickr account – hooray!

I now have Salt-N-Pepa’s “Push It” on vinyl, with “Tramp” on the B side – fucking rad! Oh and thanks Kat!

Miranda July and her amazing projects. This one in particular.

And …

Finally meeting Osmond.

Going back to uni as a postgrad student so expectations are high and plenty. I have (what I wished was a pile of new music) is a pile of readings to get through, mainly about Le Corbusier, art nouveau and Alvaro Siza.

I’m back in the darkroom for another semester – woohoo! But the cost of all the film and paper is NOT COOL. Our class has officially bought every single packet of colour paper in Sydney and I’m not talking about the colour paper for your lame-ass inkjet printer.

Joanna Newsom remixed – LAME.

Being told very disturbing sex stories about some friends. I know we all have them but this changes everything.

My camera displaying the ERR 99 message when I shoot above f5.6. I think there might be an issue with my lens.

To the obnoxious and loud woman at the front during CocoRosie pissing me and the crowd off (and most likely CocoRosie too)…SHUT YOUR MOUTH.

The Laneway Festival wasn’t as great as I’d hoped. Only the sight of Broken Social Scene, Stars and Feist together on stage redeemed that day.

Getting sick – lots of coughing, mucus and icky syrups.

And this…

An album promotion from Crystal Castles.

Warning: Some of you may find this disturbing.

NOT COOL AT ALL.

Around this time last week, I managed to …

Attend two 21st birthday parties. With revealing speeches, open bar tabs, costumes, close friends and shenanigans left, right and centre, all leading to an amazing time had by all.

And for the record I went as Mario of Super Mario Brothers fame.

A gig, well the 6 remaining songs of Matt & Kim’s set at the Oxford Art Factory.

Matt & Kim @ OAF

The uninformed change in schedule meant their set would end by 6pm. I still really enjoyed their set albeit very briefly. Here are some more photos.

That Sunday was closed off with dinner at a family restaurant, then games of pool at the local.

On Tuesday, I handed my final assignment for my undergrad course and since then I’ve been trying to organise my enrolment for postgrad, of which is not the most simplest process considering my faculty is inconsiderately slack towards these issues.

Thursday, er um, valentines day, was spent saying goodbye to our friend Kym, who’s going on exchange for a year.

I’m still here … literally stuck between pieces of cardboard and balsa, and thankfully no essays to kill my already stressed mind. With the end of the semester so near, I’m fearing:

  • Final design proposals.
  • Finding a “serious” job.
  • Graduation.
  • The future.

Our faculty has decided to conveniently phase out our 5 ½ years of Bach. of Architecture into 3 years of Bach. of Architectural Studies and 2 years of Masters of Architecture. You’d think it make our lives simpler, but no. I’m confused and freaked out at the prospect that I might just be graduating next year.

To combat that fear/reality has been some news of very-promising tours heading our way.

The Architecture in Helsinki remixers are here for a brief stop over.

After a run of shows with his ever-amazing lady (Joanna Newsom) earlier this year, Bill Callahan is returning WITH STRINGS! Could that include Joanna too? Alright, maybe that’s asking a bit too much but let me repeat myself, Bill Callahan is returning! Here are the dates:

1 Nov A&I Hall, Bangalow
2-3 Nov Troubadour, Brisbane
7 Nov The Factory Theatre, Sydney
8 Nov The Toff, Melbourne
9 Nov Northcote Social Club, Melbourne
10 Nov Jade Monkey, Adelaide
14 Nov Fly By Night, Perth

Tickets $35+ from your usual outlets.

In other news, Those Walls, Your Ears is a year old as of November and that can only mean one thing…well, two. Firstly, I am in the process of expanding the site (more like recruiting) with a posse of stylers, bangers, nerds and like-minded folk to make this site just a tad bit bigger. And secondly, a party is on the way.

Hold your horses. And pants.

By The Fireside‘s track “Moon Lake” can pretty much be a crazy re-collection of events similar to the one I had today, but not near as insane. The upcoming album that features “Moon Lake”, The Great Hartford Fire (Rogue Records), is a concept album about the 1944 circus fire at Hartford, Connecticutt. You’re probably asking yourself, how exactly do you translate that tragic event into music? Simple! Deep, ghostly harmonies that leave you harrow, or hollow, depending on how you perceive the repetitious melodies.

I thought I’d revisit one of my favourite past times today…shopping! In each shop, I had a fricken long conversation with at least one of the retailers. The first was with a DJ from the Bang Gang crew; the next was with a nice lady at General Pants over Kings of Leon and Cheap Monday jeans (blasphemy for hyping jeans they don’t even sell); then a designer in her own nifty shop on Crown St; and to cap it off, was the conversation over scarves from the middle east, Panther and hayfever over shots of vodka with two awesome dudes at Another. So shotting before photography class wasn’t the brightest idea I’ve had all year but it made for some funny/dangerous moments. Its no surprise that this shit goes down on a Tuesday.

I found another way of wasting time today, other than just procrastinating on the internet…watching that darn eclipse. I was surprised at the pace, expecting to be gone withing an hour or so. We were meant to be in class but our photography tutor decides to have three breaks to watch this astronomical event. Thats right, three! It wasn’t all that bad, it was rather nice actually. One tutorial group even had their class outside, on the balcony with a laptop watching it. And watching them made me wish I had more tutorials outside, at night and under an eclipse. Well, maybe not the latter but you get my drift.

For some apparent reason, Tuesdays are always eventful. For example, today there was, what seemed like, a stranded ferry floating in the middle of the harbour, pretty much as stationary as you can be on water. Then on my way to class today there was a fire at a Paddington unit. Then on my home, there was another fire in the city, right in front of my bus stop. It seemed like there was a fire going off where ever I went and no, I wasn’t the arsonist. It has been a very odd day today…it must be the moon.

I bought tickets today to see Ms. Kaki King-it’s a present for a dear friend of mine who’s turning 21, but ssshhh, you didn’t hear anything from me-at the Opera House. There are no gigs planned for other states, as yet, but she is playing the Studio on the 30 November. King would have to be one of my favorite contemporary guitarists-she would fit well alongside Page, Hendrix and Co.

Also on more tour news, Rufus Wainwright will be visiting our shores for the first time early next year. Here are the dates:

27 Jan The Tivoli, Brisbane
29 Jan State Theatre, Sydney
1 Feb Hamer Hall, Melbourne
7 Feb Norwood Concert Hall, Adelaide

All tickets are $79.90 and are on sale now.

I guess it would be too early to say whether he is part of the Sydney Festival bill, or whether he’d bring a sibling or two. I know Martha has visited us on numerous occasions but one more wouldn’t hurt.

I hate driving through the city, particularly at night – it’s dreadful. I have to compete with pimped up cars, a continuum visual of women puking up in gutters, shitty music that’s being forced through the window of your car by a stupid club, when you’re at a red light and, the lack of proper signage in carparks and on the road. Instead of taking 5 minutes (including traffic and the red lights) to get out, one wrong turn and you find yourself, 15 minutes still trying to find your way out. Twice now this has happened. The first wasn’t any better, I was in the wrong lane and ended up on the fricken bridge. I had to circle North Sydney to get back onto the bridge again to get home. The state of our roads is horrendous. I mean, sure, the planning of our roads isn’t entirely Craig Knowles fault nor will he fix it over night but f— at least put up some proper, fricken signage.

Now that is out of the way, I had time today to scan in a few more stills and sorts.

Patrick Wolf at the basement. My scanner doesn’t do negatives justice. :(

One of my first prints I’m actually happy with from the darkroom. The moon is even in it!

And finally one from the archives, Teenagers in Tokyo at this year’s, Essential Festival. The guys at the mini lab got confused with the negative and printed the next photo onto this one. I like it though.

Also if you haven’t gotten around to downloading the infamous Swedish pop label, Labrador‘s Summer Sampler, you can download the massive 68-track sampler here. But if you can’t be bothered, or have the capacity to, here’s a few I pulled from the awesome sampler.

[MP3] Acid House Kings – Sunday Morning
[MP3] Tribeca – Solitude
[MP3] The Radio Dept. – Pulling Our Weight
[MP3] The Legends – Play It For Today

Its a pretty good accompaniment to the weather we are having lately – spring is definitely in the air. It’d also go well with a beer in a hammock too…jeez, I am such a sloth.
