Avant-pop may just be another superfluous genre you may brush off. As ridiculous or pretentious as it may sound, if you have listened to any records from the School of Seven Bells, The Chap, or even Dan Deacon, you would’ve already dabbled with the sub-genre. However, you can add one more worthy album to that collection: Deastro’s Moondagger. Encapsulating a cosmic sensibility through his electronic narratives and textures, Moondagger is a great beginners guide to avant-pop. As 22-year-old Randolph Chabot’s moniker, Deastro no doubt has an exciting future ahead of him.

As Moondagger opens with “Biophelia” you immediately see an influence stemming from The Postal Service to M83 in it’s light-hearted electro pop beat. “Toxic Crusaders” is vulnerable but uplifting and likewise, “Pyramid Builders” follows suit. What is definitely evident in this album is the shoe-gaze effect whereby more than once you are left drifting. Moondagger is dynamic, mythical and volatile – an explosive combination that is sure to leave even the most skeptical listener taking note. Chabot’s imagination and creativity are vast and I doubt Moondagger represents it all.
