What the F is baile funk? It was nothing for me until I read (and heard) about Brazilian trio, Bonde Do Role. Their new album, With Lasers has got me so worked up its forcing me to blog (and also thanks to Vice for your 30 word review). With Lasers is every bit d-i-y and also very unexpected – its dirty pop-electro thats bound to get you dancing and (attempting to) sing along. These kids are bound to will reek havoc. So now there is a genre in my itunes library with the words baile funk, where Bonde Do Role comfortably sits isolated.

[MP3] Bonde Do Role – Office Boy
Don’t be surprised if this ends album ends up in my top 10 albums of the year. Sorry CSS, Bonde Do Role are my Brazilian faves now. Album is out June 2 on Inertia. Bad Kids Rec Club will be previewing the album this Saturday, go check it out.
Oh yeah, baile funk is music out of the shanty towns in Rio. It’s literally street party music with thousands cramming laneways in Rio dancing to Miami-infused, percussion beats, looped and blasted from speakers stacked 15ft high, every weekend. The bass is crumping, everyone is has one hell of a time and then, gunfire goes off into the air as a means of approval. It appears as the most awesome (and most F-ing dangerous) parties to attend. Those that have seen the movie, The City of God, its that times 10.
You’re right – I just completely fell in love with Bonde do Role’s “Solta O Frango.” Move aside, CSS!
So I presume you’re in Sydney, then? I’m headed down in a few weeks for two months (been a while since I’ve been home) and I’m looking forward to catching some great shows!
Solta and Gasolina are my faves at the moment.
Yes I’m in Sydney. I think you’ll be coming home to a pretty exciting time for live music then.
